(Almost) Wordless Wednesday

"The apple doesn't fall far from the tree."
And neither, apparently, do the plums!
Even though the combination of storm-heat-storm took most of our beautiful prunes from me, it's nice that our visitors can enjoy some of what drops.

I guess this mama and her young twins, who come by almost every day, are less picky, and don't mind the mushy ones.

I wrote and scheduled this post before I decided to begin the 31 Days (An Apple A Day) project.  But it's made me realize something.  I have a LOT of trimmings from the apples, and the deer really enjoy fruit.  So instead of composting it all, or throwing it in the trash, I could share with these friends in our yard.  We'll give it a try next time they come 'round.

Almost Wordless Wednesday

Bounty in Blue.. or maybe Purple!

The best part of Fall is to walk the yard and have a snack.  These and a few blackberries (also blue/purple!) are the only edible garden items I had this year.

Huckleberries...

...and Italian Prunes.  Yum!

Bucket List, "Before"

To 'celebrate' my 2 years of blogging, I thought I'd return to my very first post and redo my "Bucket List."  Before I revamp and make a new one, I thought I should take time to review the original.  There have been a few checks (✓) added as I accomplished a goal...very few, but I do celebrate those.  I have added comments, where appropriate:

1)      Kitchen:
a.       Make a sourdough starter and sourdough breads - I love Sourdough bread, but still have not been motivated enough to try my own.  Our pizza dough gets close, since I leave a little every time I make a new batch.  If it sits 2 weeks, the family seems to love it even more, and recognizes the sourdough type of flavor.

b.     ✓Make my own yogurt - I'm so glad I did this.  I really love it after it's been drained, and my go-to, healthy breakfast is our homemade Greek yogurt with roasted almonds, unsweetened coconut, and a squirt of Blue Agave nectar.

c.       Make fresh pastas - Still think I might like to make fresh ravioli from scratch.  We'll see.

d.     ✓Create more veggie-rich meals, including work lunches for DH

2)      Sewing:
a.       Machine Embroidery…I have the machine and I should use it!
b.      Sew for the local crisis pregnancy organization
c.       Sew for myself and the kids again…Make a duct tape body form? - I REALLY want to do this.  But I think I might have to wait until our young marrieds get into their own space, and my sewing room is no longer their laundry/office/storage area.

3)      Gardening
a.       Study greenhouse gardening…Get the greenhouse fixed, finished, and working for us
b.      Learn succession gardening
c.       Learn all-season gardening
d.      Establish and plant berry gardens

4)      Yard
a.       Create flower beds around the front porch, and eventually redirect the driveway - The building of the garage addition will actually force some of this to happen, and in those same plans, I should get a bigger veggie garden area with better exposure.  It'll happen!

b.      Remove sod, and put gravel around the garden boxes

5)      Woodworking - Maybe in the new garage's shop area!
a.       Butcher block cutting boards
b.      Tables and work islands
c.       Start business?

      6)      Raise chickens…?  We’ll see…-   Still on the radar, but a ways down the list.

7)      Art and Crafts - Doesn't seem to be happening!
a.       Learn to knit
b.      Keep a sketch diary
c.       Refresh my painting skills

8)      House
a.       ✓ Create our ‘library’
b.      Design a pet area, including a contraption to keep the dogs out of the cat food, or we’ll need a doggie treadmill (Rosie is already almost rolling down the stairs in the morning.) - We put the cat food on the sewing counter (not the best solution), which did help Rosie regain her proper weight range.  But I hope for a better set-up in the new enclosed breezeway between the house and garage.

       9)      Homeschooling - There have been big changes in our approach this year, with         still more adjustments needed.  Definitely a subject for the new list.
a.       More writing!
b.      ✓Expand the great new math program (Teaching Textbooks) used for grade 7 and Algebra this year for all the kids at all levels
c.       More reading!
d.      History timelines
e.      Have a ‘project component,’ so there are always ongoing projects underway for each child

       10)  Self-Improvement - SO LITTLE progress here.  Need to rethink and refocus.
a.       Daily devotions/Bible
b.      Daily exercise…Oh, ok…
c.       READ…Quit returning books to the library only partially read.
d.      Periodic dates with DH…The Love Dare?

11) Write blog entries that don't take 2 days to post, and 2 days to read! - Instead of becoming more productive, I've cut back.  I think that was the better approach for my family and my priorities.

Now, no more looking back, or feeling badly about what I didn't do... But, instead, taking steps everyday, forward toward new experiences and a renewed set of goals.

More Fallish Images from Around our Home

...But these don't give me the same type of happy feeling as my previous post!   :-(

Yep, amidst our unusually gorgeous and sunny autumn, the viruses have started.  We have 5 kids here with terrible colds, and one with a sore throat, so probably headed into the same.

Is it just in our house, or is the line blurring between cold and flu?  I thought colds were supposed to be fairly benign, it's-annoying-but-we-can-still-navigate-the-day type of illnesses.  Even though they don't have the fevers that occur with flu, the kids have complained of nausea, light-headedness, chills, and body aches, in addition to the classic sore throat, headache, congestion, and coughing.  Princess Artiste had to stay home from school a day this week because of it...  She wasn't too happy about that upon just returning to school after her 2 1/2 weeks of concussion care.

At least we have beautiful scenery out the windows.

I hope you and yours are staying healthy during this back-to-school, fall season!

Fallish Things

This is one of my favorite things about Fall...

Harvest time!  What a bounty, plus more to reach if we haul out a ladder.

And plenty to share, too!

My Guest Gardener

See this lovely petunia?  I really love the soft, pink color, and the plant looks so healthy.

The funny thing is, I planted peas in that pot (far more than sprouted), and can take no credit for the petunia's existence nor heartiness...

and we don't have another petunia anywhere in the yard or container gardens.

It was a bit of a mystery, until Prince Cuddlebunny  watched a hummingbird feeding from the fuchsias above (no photos, he was too fast!)...
"Ew, he pooped!"

Ew, maybe... But, aha!  The petunia seed source, I'm sure.  And simultaneous fertilization obviously makes for a healthy seedling.

I will no longer be so cavalier as to taste my basil or other herbs, also growing in pots along the edge of the porch, without a thorough rinsing!

Quiet Entertainment

First, another Hubby Update:  The surgery was successful in moving the broken bone back into place and re-attaching it with 3 screws to stabilize his shoulder joint... Meaning his arm should now stay in place!  Big plus.

It has been quite painful, but now we're able to spread the pain meds out a bit, so no more waking through the night to keep up.  It's not fun to be in the sling, and he's TIRED.

The first few days he was content to mostly stay in our room, reclining in his chair, which has also served as his bed so that he doesn't turn in a bad way during the night.  Now he's happy to join the family downstairs, and enjoys a spot by the window from which he can observe the activity at the bird feeders Prince CuddleBunny and I set up.

Black-capped Chickadee
The chickadees are our most frequent visitors, and we've seen 2 kinds: The Black-Capped chickadees, and the Chestnut-Backed Chickadees.  Previously, I'd been aware only of the Black-Capped birds, but I've now noticed the distinct difference between the more monotone birds and the Chestnuts with their bright brown shoulders.
Chestnut-backed Chickadee

--Is there such a thing as "bright brown?"  I wouldn't have thought so until I saw these birds.  The color really flashes when they move around.

Black-headed Grosbeak

Our first, more colorful guest was this orange and black bird with white spots.  Using our favorite bird identification book, Birds of Seattle and Puget Sound,
Birds of Seattle & Puget Sound

we thought it might be a Bullock's Oriole, which are listed as common in the area, but seldom seen.

After I was able to see its bulkier beak more closely in this (blurry) photograph, however, I discovered it was, instead, a Black-Headed Grosbeak.

Spotted Towhee
The Grosbeak looks very much like the Spotted Towhee we caught sight of in the lawn.

Like his smaller cousin, the Dark-Eyed Junco, which we saw for the first time yesterday, they clean up under the feeders.
Dark-eyed Juncos

Notice how full this feeder is...

Tuesday our watching was rewarded with the sight of one of the brightest colored NW birds, the American Goldfinch.  This beautiful guy shared the feeder with the Chickadees, a Black-Headed Grosbeak, and other finches for awhile and then flew off.

...compared to this one.  They were each filled
to the top on the same day.

Mr & Mrs Goldfinch

But he was back in about a half an hour, his little bride at his side.  :-)  She has accompanied him many times since.

Beautifully colored House or Purple Finch
We've noticed a lot of orange and red tinted finches, too, but can't get a clear ID.  We think they could be House Finches or Purple Finches... or maybe we've seen some of each.

They, too, often dine in couples.

We've seen a few hummingbirds at the liquid feeder, but not many... And never with enough time to get a picture.

The Gift of Family Service

When he knew something big was afoot, Hubby started trying to guess... "Maybe the beams got put up in the garage?... Or, the foundation started for the family room?"  You can't say he doesn't dream big!  But he had to wait.  A couple of the princes were at graduation parties, and would be home in time for dinner.

Meanwhile, he was allowed to enjoy the newly trimmed yard from the newly cleaned front porch, while Princess Sassy filled him in on the new whereabouts of the tools she'd moved.  ;-)

We also started working on dinner.

The boys finally returned, and most of us gathered at the site, as Princess Sassy and Prince Steadfast led Hubby around the corner of the house, with his eyes closed.

To remind you of the before...

And here's the result:

Checking out Prince Go-for-It's contribution: a nice bench

After dinner S'mores!

He was pretty pleased... and I'm sure we'll enjoy this spot a lot this summer, and, hopefully, for years to come.  Of course, the greatest gift was seeing the kids all pull together and do something so loving for their dad, and for something we can all share, making more fun, family memories.
