(Almost) Wordless Wednesday

I felt like a big failure.

 I'd just wanted a quick, before-bedtime snack.

"Haste makes waste."  My mom told me that many times throughout the years, so I sure should have known my hurrying wouldn't help.

But I think this task was just over my head.

A bit beyond my skill set.

WHO came up with this idea?!!!!!!

Natural peanut butter... with an ocean of oil on top that needs to be stirred in.

There is certainly no room in the jar to accomplish this feat.  We figured out long ago that it needs to be completely emptied into a bowl, painstakingly blended by stirring with a big spoon, some of the peanut butter the consistency of partially dried modeling clay.  Then it needs to be returned to the jar.  --Each step an oily, slippery, sticky mess.  And with the jar opening smaller than the bowl, and the mass of peanut butter moving more quickly than I'd intended... The peanut butter beat me.

This time.

I bought that stuff once. And I drained off the oil. Even worse than stirring. We eat a lot of peanut butter around here but not the fancy stuff.

Don't think this is at all fancy :-) ... Just Adams from Costco, in a big, family-sized vat. We used to get Jif, but now, after the Adams, it tastes like it's half sugar, and Costco doesn't have it any more so it's out of my price range.

I've gotten to the bottom where someone hasn't stirred the oil all the way down, and it's like concrete. I can't imagine dealing with a whole jar that way!
I usually scrape the whole jar into the blender when I bring it home and give it a whir- then scrape it back into the jar and store in the fridge. We've found it doesn't separate as quickly. Much better for you and the kids than the sugary kind :)
I didn't know Costco carried Adams! We always get the largest size available at the grocery store and it's my husband's job to stir it with a knife. Somehow he manages to do it without making a mess, but I am not so gifted. Maybe the blender trick mentioned by Pattie would work!

LOL. For sure! ;-) But it happens more times than I'd like to admit...

How about making your own? If you don't want to bother roast, shelling and peeling them, you could just buy the peanuts roasted, unsalted, in bulk and whiirr up small batches in the fp. Seems like it might be a worthy accompaniment to your homemade bread. (But what do I know...I prefer almond butter.)

I also usually go for the almond butter, and maybe should make my own of that, too? I'm reading a book that talks about what things are good to buy and which are good to make, and the author recommends making peanut butter. I've ground it in the store to buy in bulk, but haven't ever made my own, but now it's on my list!
We used to use Adams when we were growing up and found that using a handheld electric mixer and dough hooks (to avoid splatter) and slowly mixing in the oil into the PB, really worked well, a little would over flow, but it would mostly stay in the jar!!
